It’s a good thing everybody wore their hard hats last night. We were in full “Construction Zone” mode. The format was 1v1, round robin. Each player was given a set of 16 (green/white) creatures that benefited from +1/+1 counters. But there was a surprising amount of difference in the visions of how to best build around that core.
Alex probably leaned the most into the counters, including an infinite combo that would produce a truly monstrous monster. Ryan hit on the excellent strategy of including some pro-green and pro-white creatures. Cody just seemed to flesh out his deck with generally good support cards … as much as our $20 budget would allow. Will went off script and played a token-generating control build centered around Glare of Subdual.
Here’s how the matches went:
Ryan: defeated Cody, defeated Will, lost to Alex
Alex: lost to Will, defeated Cody, defeated Ryan
Cody: lost to Ryan, lost to Alex, lost to Will
Will: defeated Alex, lost to Ryan, defeated Cody
Mostly, each deck had a Superman moment as well as a Kryptonite moment.
Cody gets Pygmy, the Pig. Rather than let random luck decide the winner of the three-way tie, we just went with three winners.
Afterwards, Alex eked out a Jodah-win in Commander (although Ryan’s Scarecrow deck had us crippled up almost unto death before Alex tripped it up).
THG saw team Alex/Ryan put the hurt on team Cody/Will. Ouch.
Great times!
We should play again in two weeks at Tuckertown. Can’t wait.
Let’s do one more draft and, since Ryan should be moving in soon (and regaining access to the spare/Walker clone set) we’ll play a clone set rule afterwards.
See ya soon.
