I’d like to propose a reconsideration of our MTG clone set composition, specifically substituting Ridge Rannet with Oliphaunt.
While Ridge Rannet, a 6/4 beast with cycling, has been a mainstay in our cube since before my time, it often doesn’t see play. This is primarily due to its high mana cost (7 mana, including 2 Red) which renders it impractical in the fast-paced environment of our many of our rules sets. Although the cycling feature does provide some flexibility, it’s not usually enough to warrant including it in most decks.
On the other hand, Oliphaunt offers several potential benefits. Although it also has a relatively high mana cost (6 mana, 1 red), it brings in a 6/4 body with the cycling ability to one mana, and specifically mountain fetching. This mechanic promotes a more aggressive style of play, smoothing out a curve that can get mana-caught with it’s typical low mana deck builds.
Lastly, we should always remember that our clone set aims to provide both a fun and strategic experience. If a card isn’t being played frequently, it might be worth reconsidering its position, even if it has been a mainstay. Replacing Ridge Rannet with Oliphaunt could see this spot on our clone lists get more use in our matches and theory-crafts.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this proposal. I pulled 9 copies of this card from the Lord of the Rings set.
